Psychosexual Therapy

Psychosexual Therapy

Most people find it difficult to talk about problems in their sex life. Many couples and individuals find that talking to a psychosexual therapist can help them talk about and resolve their problems. According to Relate in the UK, 93% of clients who see a psychosexual therapist report that their sexual relationships become significantly better.

Psychosexual therapy is the new name for sex therapy as many sexual problems are rooted in our thoughts, emotions and habits. Psychosexual therapy can help you with problems such as lack of desire, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, pain on intercourse, inability to orgasm, or if you and your partner have got out of the habit of having sex, perhaps after illness or the birth of a child. Increasingly people are seeking help for compulsive sexual thoughts or porn use. Sometimes sexual difficulties are a symptom of unresolved conflicts within the relationship and these conflicts will need to be explored in therapy.

All of the work you do in the therapy room is based on talking, however, you are also given homework to do with your partner in the privacy of your own home. Clients are often amazed at the progress they make and how well they get on, once they are over the initial nervousness at talking frankly about their sex life.

Many people come on their own to talk about personal issues around psychosexual issues. Although I recommend that couples work together on a relationship or sexual issue, I appreciate that one partner may refuse to attend and there are times when partners may benefit more from individual therapy.

Where there is a specific sexual disorder, I may suggest that you see your GP, to rule out or investigate any underlying medical conditions.
